Formulary Medicines

Prescribers within the Trust are required to provide medicines in accordance with the local formulary, produced by the North of Tyne Area Prescribing Committee (APC). The formulary includes all medicines which have been recommended in NICE Technology Appraisals. NICE has described the benefits of local formularies to include:

• improving patient outcomes by optimising the use of medicines;
• supporting the inclusion of patient factors in decision-making about medicines;
• improving local care pathways;
• improving collaboration between clinicians and commissioners;
• improving quality by reducing inappropriate variations in clinical care;
• improving quality through access to cost-effective medicines;
• supporting the supply arrangements of medicines across a local health economy;
• supporting financial management and expenditure on medicines across health communities;
• supporting prescribers to follow guidance published by professional regulatory bodies in relation to medicines and prescribing.

Patient Information Helpline

Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust offers a dedicated medicines helpline to users of our services. The telephone helpline supports people with advice and information to enable them to make informed choices about their medication, how to take their medicines, and about how side effects can be managed.  Specialist pharmacists deliver the service and provide information and advice to callers in confidence in a way which people can understand.

The helpline number is (0191) 245 6604 and operates during 9am - 4.00pm Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays).  A voicemail facility operates at all other times. Please note: This service is available only to people who are users of services from Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust. Independent information and advice for members of the public is also available from the NHS Choices website.
